Richard George (Pictured below) established the firm in approximately 1904. He was later joined Mr. H.L.D. Jenkins and together they gave the firm the designation of Richard George & Jenkins.

Richard George & Jenkins began trading from Old Bank Chambers, High Street, Newtown and have been an ever present name on the Newtown High Street ever since.

As a rural practice in Mid Wales the firm quickly established a sound conveyancing and probate base, as well as being involved in most aspects of litigation, including criminal advocacy in the local Magistrates’ Court and conducting cases in the Industrial Tribunal, the High Court and the County Court.

After the death of the surviving Partner, H.L.D. Jenkins, in the mid 1970’s the firm was taken over by Glynne Jones.

Glynne was joined in February, 1979 by Michael Davies who joined the practice to take over and expand the litigation department. He became a partner in 1980.

Not long after, the practice expanded by taking on an assistant solicitor, Huw Evans to undertake general work with specialisation in conveyancing matters. He would later become and remain a partner until 2020

In the mid 1980’s the practice expanded by opening, a now closed, office in Machynleth as well as through the acquisition of Charles W. Bell and Co, a long established sole Practitioner trading from 11 Severn Street, Welshpool.

A fourth Partner, Mr Geoff Landers joined the Practice in the late 1980’s and became responsible for running the Welshpool Office.

Sian Davies was employed by the Practice in October 1992 at its Newtown Office to undertake primarily probate work, as well as general litigation matters with an emphasis upon family matters. Sian was a past Assistant Clerk to the Justices.

With effect from 31st March, 1993 Glynne Jones retired from the Partnership and Michael Davies was designated Senior Partner.

Nicholas Jones was appointed as a Trainee Solicitor in October 1993 and remained with the Practice as an Assistant Solicitor until December 2001.

In April 1999 the Partnership of Michael Davies, Huw Evans and Geoff Landers was dissolved. Michael Davies and Huw Evans continued as the Partners of Richard George & Jenkins (Newtown) whilst Geoff Landers became a sole Practitioner at Richard George & Jenkins (Welshpool).

On the 1st of June 2023 we completed the transfer of the criminal department from Shropshire Firm Lanyon Bowdler and open the doors to our new Shrewsbury office.

The acquisition saw all the Solicitors and staff within the department join our already existing criminal department currently operating from Newtown, Llanidloes and Aberystwyth.

The acquisition saw the following Solicitors join the firm.

As well as Accredited Police Station Representative & Crown Court Caseworker Kelly Beesty and Licensing Office Cindy Darlington.

To facilitate the additional staff, cater for the existing Shropshire and Herefordshire based clients of the department and provide all our clients with even more accessibility to Our Services we opened of the firm’s fourth office in Shrewsbury. (For the full article click on the picture)

With our new structure of four offices, as part of the changes being made, in common with many other law firms we moved from a Partnership to a Limited Company, effective as of the 1st June 2023.

We retained our name Richard George and Jenkins but as from 1st June 2023 our trading name became Richard George & Jenkins Limited, registered at Companies House under the number 14500107.

The conversion did not, in any way, affect the day to day running of the firm and we still remain regulated and adhere to the code of conduct of the Solicitors Regulation Authority. A corporate platform, however, allows us to take greater advantage of the Legal Services Act 2007 so that we will be able to offer our Clients a more diverse range of business services.
